Ultrarunner Jacky Hunt-Broersma

I have been following Jacky for awhile.  Her story and what she has accomplished  is  very inspiring.  I have a new goal to run a marathon by the end of march on my zero runner

About me

On June 18, 2014, my life was changed forever.    I had just turned 40.   As a mom of two young children and a wife I had it all, a great career and a loving family. I was a runner training for my first 1/2 marathon.  Life was good.  But 15 days after my 40th birthday I was in the hospital fighting for my life, I had gone into Septic Shock.

I spent a little over 7 weeks between the hospital and rehab and came home on August 8th.

“Celebrate the little victories in life, those can lead to the biggest changes."  This phrase came to me during my run.  I had to be reminded by my husband on the things I was doing and how far I had come and not on what I could no longer do.  There were days where I was negative and just focused on what I could no longer do, which for me was mainly running.   My outlook and perspective only changed when I started looking at the positives and stopped focusing on the negative.

I was mad for a while, wondering why me.  Losing my toes was a bigger hurdle than I thought it was going to be, and as a runner being told I would never run again was pure devastation.

I started the #toelessrunner to take something that happened to me and turn it into something positive.   To show others that no matter what you can reach any goals you set your mind to.  My road was not an easy one and it wasn't a short one either.  It took many years of hard work and a series of ups and downs to get where I am today, but I made it.

To date I have run numerous 1/2 marathons, and I ran the Kiawah Island Marathon on December 10, 2022!!!

Life doesn't always turn out as we planned but sometimes the plan God has for us is far better.  I can honestly say I am living my best life, and I wouldn't go back to the way it was before.
